Shape is the first decision when you order a nail set, and it changes everything. The same design can look soft and pretty on an almond nail and sharp and dramatic on a stiletto. Here's a simple guide to the six shapes I paint at Carine's Claws.
Almond
Slim at the sides with a rounded point, like the nut it's named after. Almond is the most flattering shape for almost every hand because it makes fingers look longer and slimmer. It's elegant at any length and strong enough for everyday life. If you're not sure where to start, start here.
Stiletto
Long, tapered and pointed. Stiletto is the most dramatic shape there is. It's made for statement looks, editorial photos and anyone who wants their nails to be the first thing people notice. It takes a little getting used to for typing and buttons, so medium length is a good first step.
Coffin
Also called ballerina. Coffin nails taper in like a stiletto but end in a flat, squared-off tip. It's bold and modern and gives you a lot of space for nail art. Coffin works best at medium to extra-long lengths.
Square
Straight sides and a flat tip. Square is classic and clean, and it's one of the most practical shapes because the wide tip is strong and doesn't snag easily. It suits short lengths and people with long nail beds especially well.
Oval
Rounded at the tip with softer sides than almond. Oval is natural, easy to wear and great if you want your nails to look polished without looking "done." It's also the easiest shape to live with at a short length.
Duck
Narrow at the base and flared wide at the tip. Duck nails are loud, playful and very Y2K. They're not for everyone, and that's exactly the point. If you want a set nobody else at the party has, this is it.
How to choose
- Want something that suits everyone? Almond or oval.
- Want the most drama? Stiletto or duck.
- Want room for detailed art? Coffin or square.
- Busy with your hands all day? Square or oval at short to medium length.
What about length?
Every shape comes in short, medium, long and extra long. Longer nails show off art and shape better. Shorter nails are easier for daily life. If you're new to press-ons, medium is the sweet spot.
Once you've picked a shape, make sure you find your nail size, then browse the hand-painted press-on sets or design your own custom set.
